上海航运交易所是经国务院批准、由交通运输部和上海市人民政府共同组建，于1996年11月28日成立的我国唯一一家国家级航运交易所，是我国政府为了培育和发展中国航运市场，配合上海国际航运中心建设所采取的重大举措。
航交所遵循“公开、公平、公正”原则，围绕“维护航运市场公平、规范航运交易行为、沟通航运动态信息”三大基本功能，现已成为国际班轮运价备案受理中心、国际航运信息中心、航运运价交易中心、船舶交易信息平台和鉴证中心、航运业资信评估中心和上海口岸航运服务中心，产生了广泛的社会效益和经济效益。美国联邦海事委员会称赞航交所是“世界海运大国市场监管的风向标”，国际权威航运媒体《劳氏日报》也称其为“中国航运信息的源头”。
